Torchwood, again

OK. FLAILING NOW!!!!

Ianto! That was very unfair! I don't want Ianto to be dead! (And I'm sure the fandom is about to erupt, isn't it?)

...but when I'm not flailing, I'm thinking well, really, what did they expect? that the 456s would just back off after being given a good talking to? It doesn't seem very smart to start threatening an alien power before you can figure out how to attack it. I feel that there was a missing part to Torchwood's plan, there. (I'm also thinking hey, did they just kill more members of MI-5 than the whole run of Spooks, so far? That takes some doing!)

But mostly, I am FLAILING. With a side of WIBBLING. And some distinct CONCERN. That was some good TV.

Also, the Cabinet decision regarding which 10% to send was all too plausible. What are league tables for, indeed? When the chips are down, anyway.

I am impressed by your ability to do non-flailing thinking right now. That part of my brain has evaporated! :(

I am secretly hoping for the reset button. Or that it was all a feint and part of some bigger and more cunning plan. Because otherwise, Jack had a very, very stupid plan.

I NEED a reset button - I can't cope without one, not after they killed Owen and Tosh off as well - too Primeval like.

Fandom seems to have erupted, right on schedule. Me, I'm down in my bunker with my tin hat, hoping that the wails will die down sufficiently that I can hear tonight's dialogue. Because while I have every sympathy with the wailing and gnashing of teeth, that was a most excellent hour of television. Something to make you think, and shiver, and drop your jaw, as well as hurl things at the screen. Torchwood's turned into the bastard child of Quatermass and State of Play, hasn't it?

hey, did they just kill more members of MI-5 than the whole run of Spooks, so far?

It rather looks that way.

It was a great hour of television, but I have rarely seen a dumber plan put into action (we will confront them! with our guns and some big speeches! Usually, people who put this plan into action have bigger guns.)

Thinking about it, it was such a dumb plan that I am wondering whether it will turn out to be a feint of some kind.

Sadly, I suspect that the planned feint was the one that tricked the military into heading for Gwen instead of Jack and Ianto, giving them the opportunity to co-opt them to their side, launch the blackmail plan, and get Jack and Ianto to Thames House reception. Though it'd be nice to hope for feints within feints, and backup plans, even if we have two seasons worth of proof that Torchwood don't generally operate like that. This might be the part of an otherwise excellent series where they revert to being just a little bit rubbish again. :-(

I shall just have to hope that Jack had a Plan B in mind, in case Plan A of talking to the alien and announcing "no deal" didn't work. Clearly he didn't anticipate the demonstration of power by way of killing everyone in the building, or he'd have gone alone and told them to sound the fire alarms and evacuate the building the moment he strode into the room. Clearly with Torchwood on the run and only remote monitoring available to him he'd have had no way of getting better firepower or knowing that the glass was bulletproof in advance. But unless it's just that he's been hanging around with the Doctor - who possibly could have talked the 456 to death - too long, he should have had something in mind for if talking didn't work.

While it was bound to fail for narrative purposes (we needed our day 4 cliffhanger, after all), I just hope that they managed to achieve something in the course of it and that Ianto and Clem and the folks at Thames House didn't die for nothing.

So torn. Brilliant hour of TV with a brilliant, beautiful, heroic death scene, but I can't help hoping (even if it would kind of cheapen things) that there will be some sort of reversal tomorrow.

I'll be interested to know what you think of day 5 when you've seen it.

I don't know, to be honest. I'm still kind of in shock, I guess.
